VHP, Bajrang Dal disrupt Easter meet

AHMEDABAD: A group of activists from Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Sunday created a ruckus at an Easter prayer meet by a Protestant Christian group in Odhav, said police officers.
A video of the incident shows activists shouting slogans of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shree Ram,” holding sticks and batons, barging into the prayer meet, and aggressively asking people and also women wearing saris and covering their heads to leave the prayer meet.
After the video went viral and was posted on X tagging Gujarat police and the police chief, Ahmedabad city police responded to it, confirming the incident. “VHP workers reached the location on suspicion of religious conversion, and the police arrived shortly thereafter. The VHP workers submitted an application at Odhav police station regarding their concerns about religious conversion. There was no incident of kidnapping or hostage-taking related to the matter. No physical altercation or any other untoward incident occurred,” Ahmedabad city police posted on its official X handle.
Inspector Pratik Zinzuvadia of Odhav police said that the incident took place in Vimalpark Society in Odhav during an Easter meet. “The prayer meeting was held in a residential society where the VHP workers created a ruckus. We have taken complaints from both sides and began an inquiry into the case,” said Zinzuvadia. He said that after reaching there, the workers called up the city police control room, and after receiving the message, a team of Odhav police reached there and controlled the situation. An FIR is yet to be registered, police sources said.
Jvalit Mehta, North Gujarat convener of Bajrang Dal, said activists of VHP and Bajrang Dal barged into places of worship of Christians at Odhav and Nikol, “as they had information that conversion activities were going on”.
