NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday landed a verbal punch on BJP-led Centre as the Indian rupee hit a historic low against the US dollar. The rupee fell 18 paise on Friday, breaching the 86-mark for the first time and settling at 86.04 against the dollar.
Taking to social media platform X, Priyanka Gandhi expressed concern over the rupee’s depreciation. “The value of the rupee against the dollar has reached its lowest level ever. For the first time in history, one dollar equals 86.4 rupees,” she wrote in Hindi.
She recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as prime minister, when the rupee was valued at 58-59 against the dollar. “Back then, Modi used to link the value of the rupee with the government’s prestige, claiming he knew everything and that a country’s currency could not fall like this,” she said.
Pointing to the rupee’s record fall under Modi’s leadership, Priyanka Gandhi demanded answers. “Today, he himself is the prime minister, and all previous records of the rupee’s depreciation have been broken. He owes an explanation to the people of this country,” she said.
