IMPHAL: Police in Manipur‘s tribal-dominated Churachandpur have filed cases against six WhatsApp channels, their administrators and others for allegedly inciting violence. The state has been riven by ethnic conflict for nearly two years.
A police statement said the WhatsApp channels had promoted enmity on communal and racial grounds by spreading false information and circulated statements which created fear, panic and public alarm.
“These WhatsApp channel administrators through their messages have deliberately and maliciously acted to outrage feelings (of) communities, while also spreading rumours to provoke offences against public tranquility,” the police statement said.
